Painting Description
The Well of Moses (French: Puits de Moïse) is a monumental sculpture recognized as one of the masterpieces of the Dutch artist Claus Sluter (1340s–1405/06). Created between 1395 and 1405, it was originally part of a larger Calvary group that stood as the central feature of the Carthusian monastery of Chartreuse de Champmol, which was founded by Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, near Dijon, France. The work is a significant example of Burgundian Gothic art and marks a transition from medieval to early Renaissance sculpture.
The "Well of Moses" is actually the base of what was intended to be a large crucifixion scene. The structure is hexagonal and includes a series of life-sized prophet figures, among which Moses is prominently featured, hence the name. Each prophet is depicted with a high degree of individuality and realism, which was innovative for the time and signaled a shift in the portrayal of religious figures. The figures are deeply carved and are notable for their expressive faces, intricate drapery, and detailed beards.
Moses, as sculpted by Sluter, stands as a commanding figure, holding the tablets of the Ten Commandments. His portrayal is imbued with a sense of gravity and wisdom, characteristics befitting the biblical prophet. The sculpture's attention to naturalism, combined with its emotional intensity, reflects the influence of Italian Renaissance art and foreshadows the developments that would take place in Northern European sculpture.
The Well of Moses was originally painted and gilded, but much of its polychrome finish has been lost over time. Despite this, the remaining stonework still conveys the power and innovation of Sluter's artistry. The work has been widely studied for its historical and artistic significance, and it remains an important cultural landmark, offering insight into the religious and artistic sensibilities of late 14th and early 15th century Western Europe.
