Painting Description
The "Tomb of Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy [detail]" is a remarkable example of late medieval sculpture, crafted by the renowned artist Claus Sluter. Philip the Bold (1342–1404) was the first Valois Duke of Burgundy, and his tomb is a testament to the grandeur and artistic sophistication that characterized the Burgundian court during his reign. The tomb is located in the Chartreuse de Champmol, a Carthusian monastery near Dijon, France, which Philip founded as a dynastic burial place.
Claus Sluter, a Dutch sculptor who worked primarily in Burgundy, is credited with the design and execution of the tomb, although he was assisted by his workshop, including his nephew Claus de Werve. Sluter's work on the tomb began around 1384 and continued until his death in 1406. The tomb was completed by his workshop in 1410. The monument is celebrated for its intricate detailing and the innovative use of naturalistic forms, which marked a departure from the more stylized Gothic conventions of the time.
The tomb features a life-sized effigy of Philip the Bold, lying in state, dressed in his ducal robes and adorned with the symbols of his rank. The effigy rests atop a slab supported by a series of arcades, beneath which are 41 pleurants, or mourning figures, each uniquely sculpted to express individual grief. These figures are considered masterpieces of medieval sculpture, showcasing Sluter's ability to convey deep emotion and realism.
The "Tomb of Philip the Bold" not only serves as a significant historical artifact but also as an important work in the study of medieval art. It reflects the political power and cultural ambitions of the Burgundian state, as well as the technical and artistic advancements of the period. The tomb remains a focal point for scholars and art enthusiasts alike, offering insight into the artistic practices and societal values of late 14th and early 15th century Europe.
