Painting Description
"La Sagrada Forma" (1685-90) is a renowned oil painting by the Spanish Baroque artist Claudio Coello, considered one of his masterpieces and a significant work of Spanish art from the late 17th century. The painting is housed in the Sacristy of the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Spain. It depicts the miracle of the Holy Form (the consecrated host), which is said to have remained intact amidst a fire at the Basilica of San Lorenzo.
The artwork measures an impressive 312 x 300 cm and is a prime example of Coello's mature style, showcasing his skill in handling light, color, and composition to create a dramatic and spiritually charged scene. The painting was commissioned by King Charles II of Spain, who was a great patron of the arts and sought to glorify the Catholic faith and the Spanish monarchy through this work.
In "La Sagrada Forma," Coello captures the moment when the Holy Form is presented to King Charles II, surrounded by a host of ecclesiastical figures, courtiers, and members of the royal family. The artist's use of chiaroscuro and his ability to render the luxurious textures of fabrics and the solemn expressions of the figures contribute to the painting's grandeur and emotional impact.
The work is emblematic of the Counter-Reformation's emphasis on the Eucharist's mystical and transformative power, a theme that was central to Catholic iconography of the period. "La Sagrada Forma" not only exemplifies Coello's artistic prowess but also serves as a historical document reflecting the religious and political climate of late 17th-century Spain.
