Painting Description
Waterloo Bridge, Grey Weather is an oil-on-canvas painting by the French artist Claude Monet, completed in 1903. It is one of several works by Monet depicting the Waterloo Bridge in London, England, over the River Thames. As with many other works by Monet, this painting is noted for its exploration of atmospheric conditions and effects of changing light, reflecting the artist's commitment to the Impressionist style.
The painting measures 73.6 cm (29 in) high by 99.7 cm (39.2 in) wide and is currently housed at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. The work presents a view from Monet's suite in the Savoy Hotel where he stayed during his sojourns in London.
The tones of grey, blue and mauve used in the painting create an abstract effect, illustrating Monet's move towards evocative landscaping in his later works. Through layering strokes of differing colors, Monet successfully captures the smog-laden fog of London's cityscape and the shadowy silhouette of the industrial bridge beyond.
This piece, together with other paintings of the bridge by Monet, demonstrate his concept of 'series paintings', where he returned to the same motif under varying weather, light, and atmospheric conditions. Despite the shared subject matter, each painting in the series is unique, offering its own interpretation of the scene. "Waterloo Bridge, Grey Weather" underscores Monet’s ability to redefine a commonly seen architectural element into an opportunity for an analysis of color and light.
