Painting Description
"Nymphéas" (Water Lilies) is a series of approximately 250 oil paintings by French Impressionist artist Claude Monet (1840–1926). The paintings depict Monet's flower garden at his home in Giverny and were the main focus of Monet's artistic production during the last thirty years of his life. Many of the works were painted while Monet suffered from cataracts.
The series is notable for the way in which Monet used detailed scenes from his garden, such as the water lilies themselves, the willow branches, the reflections of the sky in the water, and the other vegetation, to create various compositions. These paintings do not only depict the garden's appearance but also the harmonious and fluid essence of the pond, capturing the natural beauty in an abstract form.
Monet's exploration of light and color, dissolution of forms, and serial approach were highly influential to many modernist painters who followed. The "Nymphéas" series has been displayed in numerous art galleries around the world and remains one of the most famous and beloved works of the 20th century. The series highlights Monet's place as a master of color theory and as a precursor to the abstract painting movements of the mid-20th century.
