Painting Description
"The Origin of Coral or Perseus with Head of the Medusa" is a significant of art by famed French Baroque painter, Claude Lorrain, also known as Claude Gellée. Completed in approximately 1674, this oil on canvas painting is one of Lorrain's last works and is unusual within his oeuvre, as it moves away from his characteristic pastoral landscapes to depict a scene from Greek mythology.
The painting presents the narrative of Perseus flying over the sea on the winged Pegasus, just after he has used a blade to behead the monstrous gorgon Medusa. It is this scene that gives the work its second title. Perseus, flush with his triumph over evil, holds Medusa's severed head, whose hair of snakes has been replaced with intricate sprigs of coral, providing the allusion to the work's primary title.
At 149.2 cm × 198.1 cm, the painting is of substantial size and is currently housed in the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas. The piece is renowned for its detailed rendering of the sea under a dawn light, demonstration of Lorrain's noted skills in capturing delicate shifts in light and atmospheric conditions. "The Origin of Coral or Perseus with Head of the Medusa" stands as a testament to Lorrain's capacities not only as a landscape artist but also as a narrative painter, intertwining mythological themes with his distinctive, luminous vistas.
