Painting Description
"Judah and Tamar" is a notable artwork by prolific Italian artist Ciro Ferri. Born in Rome in 1634 and baptised as the son of a cobbler, Ferri expressed an interest in painting at a age and trained under the tutelage of famed Baroque artist, Pietro da Cortona. "Judah and Tamar" encapsulates Ferri's mastery of the Baroque style, vividly representing the biblical story from the Book of Genesis.
In the depicted narrative, Tamar, being the widow of Judah's son, seduces her father-in-law, Judah, under the guise of a prostitute, in an effort to ensure her lineage. At once ethereal and dramatic, Ferri's painting captures this pivotal moment, drawing on themes of deception, desperation, and familial duty. The artwork showcases Ferri’s diligent attention to detail and his exceptional talent for imbuing his figures with a sense of movement and heightened emotion.
"Judah and Tamar" exemplifies Ferri's robust drawing style and his manipulation of light and dark to evoke depth and persuade the viewer's gaze. This composition resonates with the emotional intensity characteristic of the Baroque period, while its execution demonstrates Ferri's exemplary blending of classical ideals with the dynamism of the seventeenth century. Though not the most well-known of Ferri's oeuvre, "Judah and Tamar" is a testament to his artistic prowess and contribution to Italian Baroque painting. As of the current date, the location and ownership of the artwork remain undisclosed.
