Painting Description
"New Year's Parade of the Beauties of the Green Houses" (Japanese: 青楼美人初春の仕度) is a woodblock print created by the Japanese artist Chōki Eishōsai, also known as Eishōsai Chōki. Chōki, active during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, was a pupil of the renowned ukiyo-e master Torii Kiyonaga and is known for his bijinga (pictures of beautiful women) prints. This particular work is part of the ukiyo-e genre, a style of Japanese art that flourished during the Edo period (1603–1868) and often depicted the hedonistic lifestyle of the time, including courtesans, kabuki actors, and sumo wrestlers, as well as scenes from history and folklore.
The print "New Year's Parade of the Beauties of the Green Houses" illustrates the opulence and vibrancy of the Yoshiwara, the licensed red-light district of Edo (present-day Tokyo). It showcases a procession of courtesans (oiran) and their attendants, celebrating the New Year. The term "Green Houses" is a euphemism for the brothels of Yoshiwara. In this work, Chōki captures the elaborate hairstyles, sumptuous kimono, and the intricate patterns and accessories that were characteristic of the high-ranking oiran. The print is a testament to the artist's skill in portraying the textures and fabrics of the garments, as well as the grace and beauty of the courtesans.
As a piece of the ukiyo-e tradition, "New Year's Parade of the Beauties of the Green Houses" reflects both the cultural and artistic milieu of Edo Japan. It serves as a valuable historical document, providing insight into the customs and fashions of the period, as well as the social structures within the pleasure quarters. Chōki's work is appreciated for its aesthetic qualities and its contribution to the understanding of Japanese art history. The print remains an important example of the genre and continues to be studied by scholars and enjoyed by aficionados of Japanese art.
