Painting Description
Christina, Queen of Sweden (1626–1689), was the reigning queen of Sweden from 1632 until her abdication in 1654. She is the subject of a portrait in the series of "Famous Women" by French artist Charles Abraham Chasselat (1782–1843). Christina was the daughter of King Gustav II Adolf and Maria Eleonora of Brandenburg. She came to the throne at the age of six upon the death of her father and was declared of age at 18. Christina is known for her intelligence, strong will, and cultural interests, which led to her patronage of the arts and sciences during her reign.
As a queen, Christina sought peace in the Thirty Years' War and successfully concluded the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648, which ended Sweden's involvement in the conflict. Her reign also saw the establishment of the first Swedish newspaper and the founding of the Academy of Literature, History, and Antiquities.
Christina's abdication in 1654 was a highly unusual act that shocked Europe. She converted to Catholicism, which was a controversial move given that Sweden was a staunchly Protestant country. After her abdication, she moved to Rome, where she became a prominent figure in the cultural and intellectual life of the city. Christina's life and reign have been the subject of significant interest and have been depicted in various forms of art and literature over the centuries.
Chasselat's depiction of Christina is part of his broader work on famous historical women, which reflects the fascination with her life and legacy. The series by Chasselat is notable for its portrayal of influential women from history, emphasizing their contributions to culture and society. Christina's inclusion in this series underscores her significance as a historical figure and her impact on the arts and politics of her time.
