Painting Description
The Fontana del Facchino is one of the talking statues of Rome, Italy, also known as the "Congierge statues." It is a sculpted figure of a porter (facchino in Italian), and it is one of the lesser-known statues among the six with the "talking" moniker. Created by the sculptor Carlo Ferranti in the 16th century, it is located on the Via Lata, on the facade of the Palazzo De Carolis near the Piazza Venezia.
The Fontana del Facchino is a small, bas-relief fountain that depicts a man wearing a cap, short clothes, and a beard, carrying a barrel on his shoulder from which water flows. The figure represents the facchini, the porters who would carry wine to the Roman cantinas. Unlike the more famous talking statues like Pasquino and Marforio, the Fontana del Facchino was not as commonly used for posting satirical or political commentary, but it still played a role in the city's tradition of public expression.
The fountain is one of the many public fountains in Rome that served practical purposes for the city's residents, providing drinking water to the populace before the advent of indoor plumbing. The Fontana del Facchino has undergone several restorations over the centuries to preserve its structure and function, and it remains a historical artifact that reflects the everyday life and social dynamics of Renaissance Rome.
