Painting Description
"Studie till 'Midvinterblot'" is a preparatory study by renowned Swedish artist Carl Larsson for his controversial painting "Midvinterblot" (Midwinter Sacrifice). The study, like the final work, depicts a legendary scene from Norse mythology, specifically the sacrifice of the Swedish king Domalde. The event is described in detail in the Ynglinga saga, part of the Heimskringla, an Old Norse king's saga written by Snorri Sturluson.
In the study, Larsson presents a vivid tableau of the sacrificial scene, with King Domalde at the center, his arms outstretched, ready to be sacrificed by the priests to appease the gods and end the famine plaguing the land. The crowd of onlookers, their faces a mix of horror and resignation, further underscores the gravity of the situation.
Larsson's study is notable for its detailed rendering of the characters and the dramatic intensity of the scene. Despite the controversy surrounding the final painting, which was initially rejected by the National Museum in Stockholm, "Studie till 'Midvinterblot'" provides valuable insight into Larsson's creative process and his interpretation of Norse mythology.
