Painting Description
''Resurrection of Lazarus'' (Italian: ''Risurrezione di Lazzaro'') is a painting by the Italian Baroque master Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, completed in 1609 for the wealthy Genoese merchant and art collector Ottavio Costa. It is housed in the Museo Regionale of Messina, Sicily, Italy. The painting, which measures 380 by 275 centimeters, depicts the biblical episode of the raising of Lazarus from the dead, as narrated in the Gospel of John (John 11:1-44).
Caravaggio's interpretation of the scene is renowned for its dramatic realism and emotional intensity, hallmarks of the artist's mature style. The composition is characterized by a stark contrast of light and shadow, a technique known as chiaroscuro, which Caravaggio pioneered and mastered. The light emanates from the figure of Christ, who stands to the right with an outstretched arm, commanding Lazarus to rise. The figure of Lazarus, still wrapped in burial cloths, responds to Christ's miracle with a start of life, his hand reaching out in a powerful gesture that echoes the divine command.
The painting is notable for its vivid portrayal of the onlookers' varied reactions, ranging from awe to fear, and for the inclusion of contemporary dress, grounding the miraculous event in the reality of Caravaggio's own time. This anachronistic feature was a common practice in Caravaggio's work, bringing a sense of immediacy and relevance to his religious subjects.
''Resurrection of Lazarus'' is considered one of Caravaggio's significant late works, created shortly before his death in 1610. The painting's commission was part of a competitive artistic climate in Rome, where Caravaggio was seeking to re-establish his reputation following a period of personal turmoil and legal troubles. The work's emotional power and innovative use of light not only solidified Caravaggio's legacy but also influenced generations of artists to come, contributing to the development of the Baroque style in European art.
