Painting Description
"Portrait of a Courtesan" (Italian: "Ritratto di cortigiana") was a painting by the Italian Baroque master Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, created around 1598. The work is believed to have depicted the courtesan Fillide Melandroni, who was one of Rome's most admired courtesans and a figure who featured in several of Caravaggio's works. Although the painting itself is lost, it is known through copies and written descriptions.
The portrait was renowned for its realistic depiction of Melandroni, showcasing Caravaggio's signature use of chiaroscuro and his ability to capture the psychological complexity of his subjects. The work was a testament to Caravaggio's skill in portraying human emotion and his departure from the idealized representations of figures that were common during the Renaissance. The painting's composition and the courtesan's gaze were said to engage the viewer, reflecting a sense of intimacy and immediacy that was characteristic of Caravaggio's revolutionary approach to portraiture.
"Portrait of a Courtesan" was once part of the collection of Caravaggio's patron, Cardinal Francesco Maria Del Monte, and was highly regarded during its time. However, the original painting was lost to history, possibly destroyed in the 20th century during World War II. Despite its disappearance, the work's influence persists through its impact on Caravaggio's contemporaries and the artists who followed, contributing to the evolution of Baroque art. The painting's legacy is also preserved in the numerous references made to it in historical accounts and in the surviving copies by other artists, which provide valuable insights into Caravaggio's oeuvre and the cultural milieu of late 16th-century Rome.
