Painting Description
"Fortitude" is a renowned Baroque sculpture created by Italian artist Camillo Rusconi (1658–1728). This work is part of a series of four monumental statues representing the cardinal virtues—Prudence, Justice, Temperance, and Fortitude—commissioned for the high altar of the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome, the cathedral church of the Diocese of Rome and the official ecclesiastical seat of the Pope.
Crafted between 1703 and 1715, Rusconi's "Fortitude" is a masterful representation of the virtue signifying courage and strength in the face of adversity. The sculpture is made of marble and stands as a testament to Rusconi's skill in capturing the dynamic movement and emotional intensity characteristic of the High Baroque period. The figure of Fortitude is depicted as a robust and poised individual, often portrayed with a lion, symbolizing the courage and power associated with this virtue.
Camillo Rusconi, a prominent sculptor of his time, was influenced by the works of Gian Lorenzo Bernini and contributed significantly to the development of late Baroque sculpture in Rome. His interpretation of Fortitude, along with the other three virtues, showcases his ability to infuse his sculptures with a sense of grandeur and expressive force, making them some of the most admired works in the Basilica.
The "Fortitude" by Rusconi is not only a representation of the virtue itself but also serves as an example of the artistic transition from the Baroque to the emerging Rococo style. The statue's composition, with its flowing drapery and the figure's calm yet determined expression, reflects the changing tastes of the early 18th century.
Today, "Fortitude" remains on display at the Basilica of St. John Lateran, where it continues to be a focal point for visitors, reflecting both the religious significance of the cardinal virtues and the artistic heritage of the Baroque era in Italy.
