Painting Description
"Faneuses d'Eragny" is an oil on canvas painting by impressionist Camille Pissarro, created in 1892. The work is noteworthy for its representation of rural labour, a recurrent theme in many of Pissarro's works. Located in the petit village of Éragny, north of Paris, France, Pissarro paints a serene scene of haymaking women (the Faneuses) at work in a verdant landscape. The tonal interplay and delicate treatment of light, as well as the effect of, make the painting a fine example of Pissarro's matured approach to the Impressionist style.
In terms of composition, "Faneuses d'Eragny" displays Pissarro's increasing interest in divisionism - a technique that consists of applying color in small touches or "dots". Divisionism is a form of painting that was developing at this time, led by artists such as Georges Seurat and Paul Signac. Pissarro's application of this technique in "Faneuses d'Eragny" creates a harmonious and luminous depiction of the bucolic countryside.
The dignity of rural labour is a theme in this painting which is situated within the wider discourse of the era around the working class and the transformation of the French countryside due to industrialisation. Pissarro himself was a committed anarchist, and this influenced his representation of rural workers.
Today, "Faneuses d'Eragny" is part of the collection at the National Museum Cardiff, Wales, where it continues to be admired for its detailed composition, vibrant impressionistic style, and representation of late 19th-century rural France.
