Painting Description
The "Plan de Turgot," officially known as the "Plan de Paris," is a detailed and expansive map of Paris created between 1734 and 1739 by cartographer Louis Bretez. Commissioned by Michel-Étienne Turgot, the then-prevailing Provost of the Merchants of Paris, this map is celebrated for its remarkable precision and artistic detail, offering a comprehensive bird's-eye view of the city during the early 18th century. The map was intended to showcase the grandeur and meticulous urban planning of Paris, reflecting its status as a leading European capital.
Louis Bretez, a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, was tasked with this monumental project due to his expertise in perspective and topographical drawing. Bretez was granted unprecedented access to the city's buildings, allowing him to enter courtyards and gardens to ensure the accuracy of his depictions. The resulting map consists of 21 individual sheets, which together form an extraordinarily detailed representation of Paris, capturing the city's streets, buildings, and notable landmarks with meticulous accuracy.
The "Plan de Turgot" is not merely a utilitarian map but also a work of art. It employs an isometric perspective, which means that the buildings are depicted in three dimensions, giving viewers a sense of depth and spatial relationships. This technique allows for a more immersive and engaging representation of the cityscape, making the map both a practical tool for navigation and a visually stunning piece of art.
The map was engraved by Claude Lucas and published in 1739. It has since become an invaluable historical document, providing insights into the urban layout and architecture of Paris before the extensive transformations of the 19th century. Today, the "Plan de Turgot" is highly regarded by historians, architects, and art enthusiasts alike, serving as a testament to the rich cultural and architectural heritage of Paris.
