Painting Description
The "Plan de Turgot," officially known as the "Plan de Paris" by Louis Bretez, is a highly detailed and historically significant map of Paris created in the early 18th century. Commissioned by Michel-Étienne Turgot, the provost of the merchants of Paris, the map was designed and executed by cartographer Louis Bretez between 1734 and 1739. This monumental work is celebrated for its meticulous detail and artistic quality, offering a comprehensive and bird's-eye view of Paris during the reign of Louis XV.
The map consists of 21 sheets, each measuring approximately 50 x 80 cm, which together form a large-scale, isometric representation of the city. Unlike traditional maps that use a flat, two-dimensional perspective, the Plan de Turgot employs an axonometric projection, allowing viewers to see buildings and streets in three dimensions. This technique provides an almost photographic depiction of the urban landscape, capturing the architectural and spatial intricacies of Paris with remarkable precision.
Bretez, a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, was granted special access to the city's buildings and landmarks to ensure the accuracy of his work. The map includes detailed renderings of notable structures such as the Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Louvre, and the Palais-Royal, as well as everyday elements like streets, gardens, and public squares. It also captures the Seine River in great detail, along with the numerous bridges that span it.
The Plan de Turgot is not only a cartographic achievement but also a valuable historical document. It provides insights into the urban planning, architecture, and daily life of 18th-century Paris. Today, it is regarded as one of the most important maps of Paris ever created and serves as a crucial resource for historians, architects, and anyone interested in the rich history of the French capital. The original prints of the map are preserved in various institutions, including the Bibliothèque nationale de France, where they continue to be studied and admired for their artistic and historical significance.
