Painting Description
The "Plan de Turgot," also known as the "Turgot Map of Paris," is an extraordinary and highly detailed map of Paris created in the 18th century. Commissioned by Michel-Étienne Turgot, the then Provost of the Merchants of Paris, the map was meticulously drawn by Louis Bretez, a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. The project began in 1734 and took approximately five years to complete, with the final map being published in 1739.
The Turgot Map is celebrated for its remarkable precision and artistic quality. It is composed of 21 individual sheets, which, when assembled, form a comprehensive bird's-eye view of Paris. The map covers an area extending from the Île de la Cité to the outer limits of the city at that time, capturing the intricate layout of streets, buildings, gardens, and public spaces. Each structure is depicted in a three-dimensional perspective, providing a vivid and accurate representation of the city's architecture and urban planning during the reign of Louis XV.
One of the most striking features of the Plan de Turgot is its scale and detail. The map is drawn at a scale of approximately 1:400, allowing for an extraordinary level of detail that includes individual windows, doors, and even the arrangement of trees in gardens. This level of detail not only serves as a valuable historical record but also as a work of art, showcasing the skill and dedication of its creator, Louis Bretez.
The Turgot Map has been widely studied and admired by historians, cartographers, and art enthusiasts alike. It provides invaluable insights into the urban development of Paris in the 18th century and serves as a crucial reference for understanding the city's historical geography. Today, the Plan de Turgot remains one of the most important and iconic maps of Paris, reflecting the city's grandeur and complexity during a pivotal period in its history.
