Painting Description
The "Plan de Turgot," also known as the "Turgot Map of Paris," is an extraordinarily detailed map of Paris created between 1734 and 1739 by cartographer Louis Bretez. Commissioned by Michel-Étienne Turgot, the then-prevost of the merchants of Paris, the map is a remarkable example of 18th-century cartography and urban planning. The map was intended to showcase the grandeur and complexity of Paris, reflecting its status as one of the most important cities in Europe at the time.
Louis Bretez, a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, was given the task of creating this map. He was granted access to the city's rooftops and private gardens to ensure the utmost accuracy in his work. The result is a bird's-eye view map that spans 20 large sheets, each meticulously engraved by Claude Lucas. The map is oriented with the north to the left, a common practice in maps of that era, and it covers an area from the Faubourg Saint-Antoine in the east to the Faubourg Saint-Honoré in the west, and from the Luxembourg Palace in the south to the Montmartre in the north.
The "Plan de Turgot" is celebrated for its precision and artistic detail, capturing not only the layout of streets and buildings but also the architectural features and urban landscape of Paris. It includes detailed depictions of notable landmarks such as the Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Louvre, and the Palais-Royal, as well as everyday elements like markets, gardens, and even individual trees. The map serves as both a practical tool for navigation and a work of art, offering a unique glimpse into the urban fabric of 18th-century Paris.
Today, the "Plan de Turgot" is considered a valuable historical document, providing insights into the city's development and architecture. It is frequently studied by historians, architects, and urban planners, and remains a popular subject of interest for those fascinated by the history of Paris. Copies of the map are held in various libraries and archives, and it continues to be reproduced and admired for its intricate detail and historical significance.
