Painting Description
The "Plan de Turgot," officially known as the "Plan de Paris" by Louis Bretez, is one of the most detailed and celebrated maps of Paris ever created. Commissioned in 1734 by Michel-Étienne Turgot, the then-prevost of the merchants of Paris, this monumental work was completed between 1734 and 1739. The map is named after Turgot, who was instrumental in its commissioning, and it stands as a testament to the cartographic and artistic skills of its creator, Louis Bretez.
Bretez, a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, was a skilled cartographer and artist. He was granted permission to access and measure all the buildings and streets in Paris, which allowed him to create an exceptionally accurate and detailed representation of the city. The map is drawn in an axonometric perspective, which means that it shows buildings and streets in three dimensions, giving viewers a bird's-eye view of the city.
The "Plan de Turgot" is composed of 21 individual sheets that, when assembled, form a map measuring approximately 250 by 322 cm. This large-scale map meticulously depicts the layout of Paris, including its streets, buildings, gardens, and public spaces. Each building is rendered with remarkable precision, allowing viewers to see architectural details and the spatial relationships between structures.
One of the most striking features of the "Plan de Turgot" is its artistic quality. Bretez's attention to detail and his ability to capture the essence of Parisian architecture make the map not only a valuable historical document but also a work of art. The map provides a fascinating glimpse into the urban landscape of 18th-century Paris, offering insights into the city's development, architecture, and daily life.
Today, the "Plan de Turgot" is highly regarded by historians, cartographers, and art enthusiasts. It is preserved in various institutions, including the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, where it continues to be studied and admired for its historical significance and artistic merit.
