Painting Description
The "Plan of Paris," commonly referred to as the "Plan de Turgot," is an extraordinary and meticulously detailed map of Paris created in the early 18th century. Commissioned by Michel-Étienne Turgot, the then-prevost of the merchants of Paris, the map was executed by cartographer Louis Bretez between 1734 and 1739. This remarkable work is celebrated for its precision and artistic beauty, offering a comprehensive and bird's-eye view of Paris during the reign of Louis XV.
The map is composed of 21 individual sheets, which together form a large-scale representation of the city. Each sheet measures approximately 50 x 80 cm, and when assembled, the entire map spans over 3 meters in width and 2.5 meters in height. The "Plan de Turgot" is notable for its axonometric perspective, a technique that allows for a three-dimensional representation without the distortion of scale, providing an almost photographic depiction of the city's streets, buildings, and landmarks.
Louis Bretez, a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, was granted special access to the city's rooftops and private gardens to ensure the accuracy of his work. The map captures the intricate layout of Paris with remarkable detail, including the Seine River, the Île de la Cité, and prominent structures such as Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Louvre, and the Palais-Royal. It also illustrates the bustling activity of the city, with depictions of carriages, pedestrians, and market scenes.
The "Plan de Turgot" is not only a valuable historical document but also a masterpiece of cartographic art. It provides a unique snapshot of Parisian urban life in the 18th century, offering insights into the architectural and social landscape of the time. Today, the map is held in high regard by historians, geographers, and art enthusiasts alike, and it remains a significant reference for the study of Paris's urban development.
