Painting Description
The Plan of Paris, famously known as the 'Plan de Turgot,' is a monumental and detailed map of Paris, France, created in the early 18th century by Louis Bretez under the commission of Michel-Étienne Turgot, the Provost of the Merchants of Paris. Completed in 1739, this plan is celebrated for its technical accuracy and artistic merit, offering a comprehensive bird's-eye view of the city during the reign of Louis XV.
Louis Bretez, a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture and appointed as the official topographer for the plan, was given unprecedented access to the city's gardens, houses, and royal buildings to create detailed drawings. The Plan de Turgot consists of 20 engraved plates, measuring approximately 2.5 meters by 3 meters when assembled, making it one of the most ambitious urban mapping projects of its time. Each plate was meticulously drawn and then engraved by Claude Lucas, showcasing the city's streets, buildings, gardens, and monuments with remarkable detail and accuracy.
The Plan de Turgot is not only a technical achievement in the field of cartography and urban planning but also a work of art. The map's perspective, from the southwest, provides a unique view of Paris before its late 19th-century transformations, capturing the city's medieval streets and the early stages of its modernization. It serves as an invaluable historical document, offering insights into the urban fabric and architectural heritage of Paris in the 18th century.
Today, the Plan de Turgot is held in high esteem by historians, geographers, and art historians alike. It is preserved in several major collections, including the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, and remains a subject of scholarly study and public fascination. Its detailed representation of Paris not only provides a snapshot of the city's past but also exemplifies the skill and dedication of its creators, making it a landmark achievement in the history of urban cartography.
