Painting Description
"St. George and the Dragon" is a late 15th-century sculpture created by the German artist Bernt Notke. This monumental work is a wooden statue ensemble located in the Storkyrkan (Stockholm Cathedral) in Stockholm, Sweden. Notke, who was active during the Northern Renaissance, completed this piece around 1489, and it has since become a celebrated example of late medieval art in Scandinavia.
The sculpture depicts the legendary tale of St. George slaying the dragon, a story that has been a popular motif in Christian art, symbolizing the battle between good and evil. In the narrative, St. George is often portrayed as a knightly figure who rescues a town and a princess from the clutches of a fearsome dragon. Notke's rendition is particularly notable for its dramatic composition and intricate detail, which showcase the artist's skill in wood carving and his ability to convey narrative through sculpture.
The work was commissioned by the Swedish regent Sten Sture the Elder after his victory at the Battle of Brunkeberg in 1471, as a votive offering and a symbol of his triumph. The sculpture serves as an allegory for Sture's defeat of the Danish forces, with St. George representing Sture and the dragon symbolizing the Danish king Christian I.
Measuring approximately 3.5 meters in height, "St. George and the Dragon" is characterized by its expressive figures and dynamic movement. The sculpture is rich in iconography, with St. George clad in Gothic armor, poised with a lance over the writhing dragon, and the princess and a lamb nearby, signifying purity and innocence. The piece is also adorned with gilded elements and polychrome, enhancing its visual impact and the perception of its details.
"St. George and the Dragon" by Bernt Notke is a significant work of art that not only exemplifies the artist's mastery of his medium but also reflects the political and cultural context of its time. It remains a treasured artifact within Swedish cultural heritage and continues to draw the attention of art historians and visitors alike.
