Painting Description
The Arch of Titus is a 1st-century AD honorific arch located on the Via Sacra, Rome, just to the south-east of the Roman Forum. Commissioned by the Roman Senate and constructed under the emperor Domitian shortly after the death of his older brother Titus (who died in AD 81), the arch commemorates Titus's victories, including the Siege of Jerusalem in AD 70. The Arch of Titus has provided the general model for triumphal arches across the world over the centuries.
Constructed of Pentelic marble, the arch stands on a travertine foundation. It is a single-passage arch, with fluted columns on each side, framing the archway. The spandrels on the upper corners are decorated with reliefs of winged victories, and the inside of the arch is adorned with magnificent reliefs depicting the triumphal procession celebrated in 71 AD, with the spoils from the Temple in Jerusalem, including the Menorah and the Table of the Showbread.
The arch has significantly influenced the art and architecture of the Western world, serving as a prototype for many monuments dedicated to great military victories. Its design and decorative program also play a crucial role in the study of Roman art and propaganda, providing insight into the values and iconography of the Flavian dynasty.
Prior to the restoration carried out by Giuseppe Valadier at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries, the Arch of Titus had been partially buried under rubble and earth, with only the upper part of the arch visible. Valadier's restoration included the removal of the earth and the addition of new marble sections, which were controversially done in a brighter white marble that contrasted with the original patina of the arch.
The painting by Bernardo Bellotto, which depicts the Arch of Titus prior to Valadier's restoration, is a valuable historical document that captures the monument in its pre-restoration state. Bellotto, a Venetian urban landscape painter and printmaker, was known for his precise renderings of city scenes. His work on the Arch of Titus is no exception, providing an important visual record of the arch's condition and the surrounding area in the 18th century.
As a significant cultural and historical artifact, the Arch of Titus continues to be a subject of scholarly research and a popular tourist attraction, symbolizing the grandeur and endurance of the Roman Empire.
