Painting Description
"Susanna and the Elders (1493-1495)" is a significant masterpiece by Italian painter Bernardino di Betto, also known as Pinturicchio. Rendered with tempera on wood, the artwork measures 49.2x33.7 cm and is currently preserved in the Kupferstichkabinett, in Berlin, Germany.
The painting tells the Biblical story of Susanna attempted abuse by lecherous elders, a subject frequently depicted in art history. Pinturicchio demonstrates his notable narrative capacity by presenting all the stages of the story in a single scene. The upper part shows the innocent Susanna in a luxuriant garden, with the voyeuristic elders spying on her in the background.
Pinturicchio's composition shows a strong influence of his teacher, Perugino, both in morphology and in the serene landscape that unrolls behind the actors of the drama. The light colors, softened tones, and detailed decorations that are characteristic of Pinturicchio's style imbue the scene with a calm atmosphere, which underscores the disturbing nature of the action itself.
Despite the limitations of the small format, Pinturicchio manages to introduce some striking details, such as the superb peacock and the architecture's careful design. The result is a small masterpiece of Italian Renaissance, where stylistic elegance combines with the painter's narrative ability.
