Painting Description
"Aeneas Piccolomini Leaves for the Council of Basle 1502-08" is a fresco by the Italian Renaissance artist Bernardino di Betto, commonly known as Pinturicchio. This work is part of a series of frescoes that adorn the walls of the Piccolomini Library, located within the Duomo di Siena, the cathedral of Siena, Italy. The library was commissioned by Cardinal Francesco Todeschini Piccolomini, who later became Pope Pius III, to honor his uncle, Pope Pius II (born Enea Silvio Piccolomini).
The fresco in question depicts a young Enea Silvio Piccolomini, the future Pope Pius II, embarking on his journey to the Council of Basel, which was a major 15th-century ecclesiastical assembly convened to address church reform and to resolve the Hussite heresy in Bohemia. The council began in 1431 and continued with various interruptions until 1449.
Pinturicchio's fresco, created between 1502 and 1508, is renowned for its vivid portrayal of the historical event and its rich detail, which offers insight into the fashion, architecture, and social customs of the time. The artist's use of perspective and his incorporation of classical architectural elements reflect the influence of the Renaissance on his work. The fresco is also notable for its narrative quality, effectively capturing the moment of departure and the anticipation of the significant ecclesiastical and diplomatic mission that lay ahead for the young Piccolomini.
The entire series of frescoes in the Piccolomini Library is considered one of Pinturicchio's masterpieces, showcasing his skill in composition and his ability to weave complex stories into his art. The library's frescoes chronicle the life of Pope Pius II, from his early days as an ambassador and scholar to his papacy and eventual canonization. "Aeneas Piccolomini Leaves for the Council of Basle" is a key part of this narrative cycle, illustrating a formative episode in the life of one of Siena's most illustrious sons.
