Painting Description
"William Penn's Treaty with the Indians" is a historical painting by the Anglo-American artist Benjamin West, completed in 1771-72. The painting depicts a legendary meeting between William Penn, the founder of the Province of Pennsylvania, and a group of Lenape (Delaware) Indians. This event is said to have taken place under an elm tree at Shackamaxon, in what is now the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia, in 1682 or 1683. The treaty is famous for supposedly being the only treaty "never sworn to, nor broken."
West's painting is an idealized representation of this peaceful agreement, which has become an iconic image of Penn and his Quaker principles of non-violence and fair dealing with the Native Americans. The work is significant for its portrayal of Native Americans in a sympathetic light, a departure from the often negative depictions common in art of that period. It reflects the Enlightenment-era ideals of rational diplomacy and mutual respect among different cultures.
The painting is part of a series of works commissioned by Thomas Penn, William Penn's son, as part of an effort to promote his family's legacy and the virtues of the Pennsylvania colony. Benjamin West, who was born in Pennsylvania but spent much of his career in London, was a prominent history painter and the second president of the Royal Academy. His work, including "William Penn's Treaty with the Indians," played a crucial role in shaping the visual narrative of American history in the 18th century.
"William Penn's Treaty with the Indians" is not only a work of art but also a historical document that reflects the values and attitudes of its time. It remains an important piece in the study of American art history and the cultural interactions between European settlers and Native Americans. The painting is held in the collection of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia.
