Painting Description
"Elizabeth, Countess of Effingham" is an oil on canvas portrait painted by Anglo-American artist Benjamin West. It portrays Elizabeth Howard (1740-1813), the wife of Thomas Howard, Effingham's third earl. The painting captures her with embroidery in her hand, indicative of contemporary cultural norms that associated women with domesticity and gentility.
The portrait was created circa 1764, when West was establishing his reputation as a painter in London. The Countess of Effingham’s pose, with a gentle smile and serene expression, is an embodiment of aristocratic grace; a typical element in the mid- 18th-century portraiture.
This artwork, among others by West, exemplifies his ability to blend Rococo lightness and elegance with a Neoclassical adherence to detail and realism, helping him to stand as a pivotal figure in the transition between these two major art movements. This painting is currently in the collections of the Huntington Library, San Marino, California. Further research is needed regarding the commission, possible critical responses, and any restoration history this painting might have.
