Painting Description
"Piper Indicum" is an exquisite botanical illustration from the acclaimed "Hortus Eystettensis", a codex produced by German apothecary and botanist Basilius Besler (1561–1629). Published in 1613, "Hortus Eystettensis" is a significant work in that it was one of the first comprehensive catalogues of plant life, comprising approximately 367 copperplate engravings. The book was commissioned by Prince-Bishop of Eichstätt, Johann Konrad von Gemmingen, who desired to showcase the diverse array of species grown in his garden in Eichstätt, Bavaria.
"Piper Indicum" directly translates to "Indian Pepper," symbolizing the global reach of botanical exploration during this period. This illustration typifies Besler's meticulous attention to the faithful replication of the plant’s form, with distinct attention to detail visible in the leaves, stem, and fruit. However, being an early botanical illustration, "Piper Indicum" does not necessarily represent a scientifically accurate botanical study, as the focus at the time was primarily on aesthetic and symbolic representation rather than strict botanical precision.
While the original "Hortus Eystettensis" is preserved in various museums and private collections across the world, "Piper Indicum" stands as a unique testimony to early modern botanical illustration, bridging the gap between art, nature, and scientific discovery. Despite the scarcity of editions and the immense historicity of the work, the influence of "Piper Indicum" and Besler's other contributions have continued to resonate in the realms of botany, horticulture, and botanical art.
