Painting Description
Lilium by Basilius Besler refers to a botanical illustration of a lily from the seminal work "Hortus Eystettensis," a codex produced by the German apothecary and botanist Basilius Besler (1561–1629). The "Hortus Eystettensis" is a monumental horticultural work that documents the garden of the Bishop of Eichstätt in Bavaria, which was one of the earliest and most spectacular European botanical gardens. Completed in 1613, the work is renowned for its detailed and accurate illustrations of flowers, herbs, and plants, which were drawn from life and engraved on copper plates.
The illustration of the Lilium is just one of the 367 plates included in the work, which features over 1,000 species of plants in total. Besler's illustrations are significant for their artistic merit as well as their scientific value, providing a snapshot of the botanical knowledge and horticultural aesthetics of the early 17th century. The "Hortus Eystettensis" was published in multiple editions, with the first edition printed on large, imperial folio sheets, making it one of the largest and most expensive books of its time.
The Lilium plate, like others in the collection, showcases Besler's attention to detail and his ability to capture the beauty and characteristics of the plants he depicted. The work has been praised for its contribution to botany and art, and original copies are highly valued by collectors and institutions. The "Hortus Eystettensis" remains an important historical record and continues to be a reference for botanists, historians, and artists interested in the intersection of science and art during the Renaissance and early modern period.
