Painting Description
'''Hortus Eystettensis''' is a monumental botanical work compiled by the German apothecary and botanist Basilius Besler (1561–1629) at the behest of Johann Konrad von Gemmingen, Prince-Bishop of Eichstätt in Bavaria. The work, whose title translates to "The Garden at Eichstätt," is a codex documenting the diverse collection of plants in the bishop's garden, which was one of the earliest botanical gardens in Europe established for the cultivation of medicinal plants and rare botanical specimens.
Published in 1613, ''Hortus Eystettensis'' is celebrated for its detailed and vivid botanical illustrations. The work features over 1,000 hand-colored, life-size engravings of flowers, herbs, vegetables, and exotic plants, making it one of the most comprehensive and visually stunning botanical records of the 17th century. Besler took over 16 years to complete the illustrations, which were based on the actual specimens from the garden, and were drawn and engraved with the help of his brother and a team of skilled artists and craftsmen.
The ''Hortus Eystettensis'' was groundbreaking in its accuracy and the aesthetic quality of its plates, which were arranged according to the four seasons, reflecting the layout of the garden itself. The work was published in two formats: a larger, luxury edition with hand-colored plates intended for a wealthy clientele, and a smaller, uncolored version that was more accessible to scholars and the general public.
As a significant contribution to the fields of botany and horticulture, ''Hortus Eystettensis'' not only provided a detailed record of the plants grown in a particular locale at the dawn of the 17th century but also served as an inspiration for future botanical gardens and the scientific study of plants. The work remains a valuable resource for historians of science and art, as well as for botanical illustrators and garden enthusiasts. Its influence extended beyond its time, contributing to the development of modern botanical taxonomy and the proliferation of botanical illustration as a scientific and artistic discipline.
