Painting Description
"Aus dem Hortus Eystettensis" is a seminal work in the field of botany and botanical illustration, authored by Basilius Besler, a respected apothecary and botanist from Nuremberg, Germany. Published in 1613, this monumental work is renowned for its detailed and exquisite illustrations of the plants found in the garden of Johann Konrad von Gemmingen, the Prince-Bishop of Eichstätt. The garden, located at the bishop's residence in Willibaldsburg, was one of the earliest and most significant botanical gardens in Europe, showcasing a wide variety of plants from different parts of the world.
The Hortus Eystettensis, as it is commonly known, stands as a landmark achievement in botanical literature, bridging the gap between the medieval herbals and the scientific botany that would emerge in the centuries following its publication. The work is notable not only for its scientific value but also for its artistic merit. Besler's illustrations, which were produced with the assistance of several artists, are celebrated for their accuracy, detail, and aesthetic appeal, making the Hortus Eystettensis a masterpiece of botanical illustration.
Spanning over 1,000 pages, the Hortus Eystettensis was published in a large folio format and featured more than 1,000 hand-colored copperplate engravings, representing around 667 plant species. The publication was a monumental task that took 16 years to complete, from 1596 to 1613. It was issued in two versions: a colored edition, which was exorbitantly expensive and intended for a wealthy clientele, and an uncolored version, which was more accessible.
The Hortus Eystettensis is divided into four sections, corresponding to the four seasons, and presents the plants in the order in which they flowered in the bishop's garden. This seasonal arrangement was innovative for its time and provided readers with a vivid sense of the garden's appearance throughout the year.
Today, the Hortus Eystettensis is recognized not only as a pioneering work in botany and horticulture but also as a valuable cultural artifact that offers insights into the scientific and artistic endeavors of the early 17th century. Its illustrations continue to be admired for their beauty and precision, and the work remains a significant reference for botanists, historians, and art enthusiasts alike.
