Painting Description
"2 Botanical Etchings" by Basilius Besler refers to two individual etchings from the larger work "Hortus Eystettensis," a monumental botanical book published in 1613. The "Hortus Eystettensis" is renowned for its detailed and accurate illustrations of the flowers and plants grown in the garden of Johann Konrad von Gemmingen, prince bishop of Eichstätt in Bavaria. Basilius Besler (1561–1629), a respected Nuremberg apothecary and botanist, was commissioned to create the work, which took him over sixteen years to complete.
The "2 Botanical Etchings" are part of a collection that includes 367 copperplate engravings, each meticulously detailing the plants in full bloom during different seasons. These etchings are significant for their artistic merit as well as their scientific value, as they represent one of the earliest attempts to systematically document botanical diversity. Besler's work was groundbreaking in that it depicted the plants as they grew, showing them in their natural state rather than following the stylized conventions of earlier herbals.
The etchings are characterized by their life-size representations and the high level of detail, which was achieved through a collaborative process involving skilled illustrators and engravers. The "Hortus Eystettensis" was published in a large-folio format, allowing for the impressive scale of the illustrations, which was unusual for botanical works of that time. The etchings were hand-colored after printing, making each copy of the book unique.
As individual pieces, the "2 Botanical Etchings" by Basilius Besler continue to be appreciated for their historical significance and beauty. They are often studied by botanists, art historians, and enthusiasts of botanical illustration. The etchings are held in various collections around the world and are considered important artifacts in the history of botany and botanical art.
