Painting Description
"Landscape with the Finding of Moses" is a 1631 oil on panel painting by Dutch Golden Age painter Bartholome Breenbergh. Measuring 38.8 × 52.1 cm, the work is an example of Breenbergh's recurring artistic theme of combining biblical narratives with detailed landscape settings. This practice reflects the dominant trend of 17th-century Dutch landscape painting where biblical mythological narratives often served as pretexts for creating works with an emphasis on natural settings.
The artwork depicts the episode from the Book of Exodus (2:5-6) where baby Moses, hidden in a basket among the reeds by the river Nile by his sister Miriam, is discovered by Pharaoh's daughter. The scene is set in a wide landscape, showing Moses in a water basket, placed in the reeds, watched over by Miriam in the middle-distance, while in the foreground Pharaoh's daughter and her retinue are seen approaching. The scene is dominated by an imposing rock formation on the right which adds dramatic effect.
The painting's expressivity and detail reflect Breenbergh's earlier stay in Rome (1619-1629) where he was part of the group of northern artists known as the Bentvueghels. His Roman experience significantly marked his artistic style, particularly visible in the impressive rock formations and the use of light in this painting.
"Landscape with the Finding of Moses" is one of Breenbergh's most significant works that combine his keen interest in landscape, antiquities, and biblical narratives. The painting's precise location is currently unidentified; however, its copies are held in the National Gallery, London and the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg.
