Painting Description
"Das Gastmahl des König Balthasar" (The Banquet of King Belshazzar) is a monumental painting by the German Baroque artist Bartholomäus Strobel the Younger. Completed in the 17th century, this work is renowned for its intricate detail, grand scale, and its depiction of the biblical story from the Book of Daniel, where the Babylonian king Belshazzar is hosting a feast using sacred vessels looted from the Temple in Jerusalem, leading to the appearance of a divine hand writing on the wall, which Daniel interprets as the king's doom.
Strobel, born in Breslau (now Wrocław, Poland) around 1591, was a significant figure in Central European painting, known for his complex compositions and preference for large-format works. "Das Gastmahl des König Balthasar" is considered one of his masterpieces and is a prime example of the dramatic intensity and attention to detail characteristic of his style. The painting is notable for its depiction of numerous figures, lavish costumes, and a rich portrayal of the opulence and decadence of Belshazzar's court.
The work is also recognized for its historical and cultural references, including the presence of various contemporary figures from the 17th century, which Strobel incorporated into the scene. This blending of biblical narrative with contemporary elements serves as a commentary on the political and social issues of the artist's time.
"Das Gastmahl des König Balthasar" is housed in the National Museum in Warsaw, Poland. It remains an important piece for the study of Baroque art and provides insight into the religious, cultural, and political milieu of the period in which Strobel lived and worked.
