Painting Description
"Hagar and Ishmael" is a 17th-century oil painting by the Dutch Golden Age painter Barent Pietersz Fabritius, also known as Barent Fabritius. Born in Middenbeemster in 1624, Barent was the younger brother of the more famous painter Carel Fabritius and a pupil of Rembrandt van Rijn. His work "Hagar and Ishmael" depicts the biblical story of Hagar, the Egyptian handmaid of Sarah, and her son Ishmael, as narrated in the Book of Genesis. The story tells of Hagar and Ishmael being cast out into the desert by Abraham at Sarah's behest and their subsequent divine rescue.
The painting is characteristic of the Baroque period, with a focus on dramatic intensity and emotional resonance. It captures the moment of despair experienced by Hagar as she faces the prospect of death for herself and her son, only to be saved by an angel who reveals a well of water to sustain them. Fabritius's treatment of the subject matter reflects the influence of his teacher, Rembrandt, in the use of chiaroscuro and the psychological depth given to the figures.
While Barent Fabritius is less well-known than his brother Carel, his works are considered important for understanding the development of Dutch painting in the period following Rembrandt's influence. "Hagar and Ishmael" is noted for its expressive portrayal of the figures and the effective use of light and shadow to convey the narrative. The painting is part of the collection of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, where it remains an example of the storytelling power of Dutch Golden Age painting.
This introduction provides an overview of the painting's subject, its artistic context, and its significance within Fabritius's oeuvre and Dutch art history. Further details on the painting's dimensions, provenance, and critical reception would require additional research and could be included in a more comprehensive article.
