The work commemorates an event during the Hundred Years' War between England and France when Calais, a French port on the English Channel, was under siege by the English for over a year in 1346-1347. Rodin's sculpture captures the poignant moment when six prominent citizens of Calais, known as "burghers," volunteered to surrender themselves to King Edward III of England to save their city from destruction, expecting to be executed.
