Painting Description
''The Burghers of Calais'' is one of the most famous sculptures by French artist Auguste Rodin, created between 1884 and 1895. The work commemorates an event during the Hundred Years' War between England and France when Calais, a French port on the English Channel, was under siege by the English for over a year in 1346-1347. Rodin's sculpture captures the poignant moment when six prominent citizens of Calais, known as "burghers," volunteered to surrender themselves to King Edward III of England to save their city from destruction, expecting to be executed.
Commissioned by the city of Calais, Rodin took a novel approach to this historical subject. Instead of depicting the burghers in a heroic or idealized manner, he portrayed them as anguished and vulnerable figures, which was a stark departure from traditional heroic sculpture. Each figure exhibits a unique expression of sorrow, despair, and resignation, reflecting the gravity of their sacrifice. Rodin's innovative composition abandons a hierarchical arrangement and instead places the figures on the same level, inviting viewers to engage with the emotional intensity of the scene.
The sculpture consists of six life-sized figures, each representing one of the burghers: Eustache de Saint Pierre, the wealthiest of the group and the first to volunteer; Jean d'Aire, who carries the key to the city; Jacques de Wissant and his brother Pierre de Wissant, shown in expressive gestures; Jean de Fiennes, depicted in youthful vigor; and Andrieu d'Andres, shown in a pose of despair. The figures are dressed in sackcloth, with nooses around their necks and carrying the keys to the city's gates.
Rodin's ''The Burghers of Calais'' is widely regarded as a masterpiece of modern sculpture, embodying the themes of sacrifice, civic virtue, and the human condition. The original bronze cast of the sculpture stands in Calais, while other casts can be found in various locations around the world, including museums and public spaces, attesting to the work's enduring significance and appeal. The sculpture has been praised for its emotional power and the way it revolutionized the portrayal of historical subjects in art, making it a seminal work in Rodin's oeuvre and a landmark in the history of sculpture.
