Painting Description
"Penelope Undoing Her Tapestry During the Night" is an illustration by French artist Auguste François Gorguet, created for publication in "L'Illustration," a prominent French weekly magazine that was in circulation from 1843 to 1944. The illustration depicts a scene from Homer's epic poem, "The Odyssey," in which Penelope, the faithful wife of the protagonist Odysseus, employs a clever ruse to delay her suitors who press her to remarry in the belief that her husband will not return from the Trojan War.
In Gorguet's rendering, Penelope is shown in the act of unraveling her tapestry, a task she had claimed must be completed before she could choose a new husband. She had promised the suitors that she would select one of them once she finished weaving a funeral shroud for her father-in-law, Laertes. However, to remain loyal to Odysseus and to buy time, she weaves the shroud by day and undoes her work by night, a secret she keeps for three years until she is betrayed by one of her maids.
Gorguet's illustration captures the tension and poignancy of Penelope's plight, as well as her cunning and determination. The artwork reflects the artist's skill in composition and his ability to convey narrative through visual means. As a piece of historical illustration, it also offers insight into the cultural reception of classical mythology in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a period marked by a resurgence of interest in ancient Greek literature and art.
Auguste François Gorguet (1862-1927) was a French artist known for his illustrations and paintings that often drew upon historical and mythological themes. His work in "L'Illustration" contributed to the magazine's reputation for high-quality imagery and helped disseminate artistic interpretations of literary works to a broad audience during the Belle Époque era. Gorguet's illustration of Penelope is a testament to his craftsmanship and the enduring appeal of the stories from "The Odyssey."
