Painting Description
"Children at the Pump" (German: "Kinder am Brunnen") is a 1912 oil painting by German Expressionist artist August Macke, known for his vibrant use of color and innovative compositions. As a member of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a group of artists at the forefront of the early 20th-century avant-garde movement in Munich, Macke played a significant role in the development of Expressionism in Germany.
The painting depicts a scene of everyday life, a subject that Macke often returned to, showcasing his interest in capturing the simplicity and purity of the world around him. In "Children at the Pump," a group of children is gathered around a well or pump, engaged in the seemingly mundane activity of collecting water. However, Macke elevates this ordinary moment to one of lyrical beauty through his use of bright, harmonious colors and a composition that reflects the influence of contemporary French art, particularly Fauvism and Cubism.
Measuring 47.5 cm x 31.5 cm, the work is executed in a style that combines the flatness and bold outlines of Fauvist painting with a sense of rhythm and pattern that hints at the artist's interest in the decorative qualities of the scene. The children are rendered with a degree of abstraction, their forms simplified and their features minimized, which allows the focus to remain on the interplay of color and shape.
"Children at the Pump" is emblematic of Macke's artistic vision during a period of intense experimentation and productivity. Sadly, his career was cut short when he was killed in action during World War I in 1914, making his existing body of work all the more precious. Today, "Children at the Pump" is considered an important example of early German Expressionism and is held in high regard for its aesthetic qualities and its representation of a peaceful, idyllic moment in time, captured just before the outbreak of the war that would end the artist's life and forever change the world.
