Painting Description
"Die Geschichte von Venus und Tannhäuser" (The Story of Venus and Tannhäuser), also known as *Under the Hill*, is an unfinished erotic novel by the English illustrator and author Aubrey Vincent Beardsley (1872–1898). Beardsley, known for his distinctive black-and-white illustrations that emphasized the grotesque, the decadent, and the erotic, embarked on this literary work amidst his contributions to the Art Nouveau movement. The novel is a retelling of the Tannhäuser legend, which revolves around the medieval German knight and poet, Tannhäuser, who seeks redemption after spending a year in the Venusberg, the mythical mountain home of Venus, the Roman goddess of love.
Beardsley's narrative diverges significantly from traditional interpretations of the legend by embracing and amplifying the erotic elements of the story. His version is a celebration of sensuality and the aestheticism movement, which advocated for art's sake, suggesting that the pursuit of beauty should be the primary concern of art and literature, rather than moral or didactic purposes. Beardsley's work on the novel was cut short by his untimely death from tuberculosis at the age of 25, leaving "Die Geschichte von Venus und Tannhäuser" incomplete.
The manuscript, published posthumously, showcases Beardsley's intricate prose alongside his iconic illustrations. Although incomplete, the work is considered a significant contribution to the fin-de-siècle literature, reflecting the decadent movement's preoccupation with themes of beauty, eroticism, and the transgressive. Beardsley's unique blend of visual and textual storytelling in "Die Geschichte von Venus und Tannhäuser" continues to captivate readers and scholars, offering insight into the artist's imaginative vision and the broader cultural currents of his time.
