Painting Description
"The King of the Golden River" is a fairy tale written by John Ruskin in 1841 and first published in the same year. Although Arthur Rackham, an eminent British illustrator, is often associated with this work due to his popular illustrations, the original text was authored by Ruskin. The story, which is considered a classic of children's literature, blends elements of fantasy and moral lessons, characteristic of Victorian literature.
The narrative centers around the Black brothers: the kind-hearted Gluck and his two cruel older brothers, Hans and Schwartz. The plot unfolds in the valley of Stiria, where the brothers' greed and mistreatment of the land incite the wrath of supernatural forces. After a series of moral trials instigated by the mysterious Golden River and its ethereal King, the tale culminates in a poignant moral conclusion about the virtues of kindness and the vices of greed.
Arthur Rackham's illustrations, produced later, have been highly praised for their intricate detail and whimsical quality, which effectively complement Ruskin's richly imaginative tale. Rackham’s contribution significantly enhanced the visual appeal and interpretative depth of the story, securing its place as a beloved and enduring work in the canon of illustrated children's literature.
