Painting Description
"The Three Graces" is a marble sculpture created by the Italian Neoclassical artist Antonio Canova. The work, completed between 1813–1817, depicts the three daughters of Zeus, collectively known as the Graces, or Charites in Greek mythology. These figures - Aglaea (Beauty), Euphrosyne (Mirth), and Thalia (Abundance) - were famous in Greek mythology for bestowing beauty and charm, often seen serving with the goddess love, Aphrodite.
The sculpture is a remarkable example of Canova’s mastery of form and his interpretation of the neoclassical aesthetic. It beautifully represents Canova's ability to utilize marble to convey soft and living surfaces, showcasing his detailed and realistic carving technique. The figures are positioned embracing each other, hinting at their inseparable nature in mythology. Their relaxed yet aligned stances reflect an idealized version of female beauty as per the standards of the time.
It is owned by the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, where it is permanently exhibited. Prior to its exhibition at the Hermitage, it was specifically commissioned by Empress Josephine, the wife of Napoleon Bonaparte. Following Josephine's death, Tsar Alexander I of Russia acquired the piece, enriching the collection of the Hermitage. "The Three Graces" remains one of Canova's most admired and studied works.
