Painting Description
''Cupid and Psyche'' is a neoclassical sculpture by the Italian artist Antonio Canova, renowned for his marble sculptures that gracefully blend ancient Roman art with emerging modern tastes. Created in the late 18th century, this masterpiece depicts the mythological lovers Cupid, the Roman god of love, and Psyche, a mortal woman of extraordinary beauty, in a moment of tender intimacy and revival.
The sculpture illustrates the narrative from ''The Golden Ass'' by Apuleius, where Psyche has been put to sleep by a potion. In Canova's rendition, Cupid is shown as he gently awakens Psyche with a kiss, a scene symbolizing the triumph of love over hardship. The work is celebrated for its delicate portrayal of emotion and the technical skill evident in the figures' interaction, with Cupid's wings and the texture of the skin being particularly admired.
Commissioned by Colonel John Campbell in 1787, the first version of ''Cupid and Psyche'' was completed in 1793 and is now housed in the Louvre Museum in Paris. A second version, which was finished in 1796, resides in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. Canova's ability to imbue marble with a sensuality and softness that belies its hardness is a hallmark of his style, and ''Cupid and Psyche'' stands as one of his most evocative and popular works, capturing the essence of neoclassical aesthetics and the enduring appeal of classical mythology.
