Painting Description
"Madonna with St. Jerome" is a notable oil on canvas painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Antonio Allegri da Correggio, commonly known as Correggio. This work, also known as "The Day" or "Il Giorno," is celebrated for its masterful use of color and light, as well as its tender and intimate portrayal of the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child. Painted circa 1528, the artwork measures 205 cm × 141 cm (81 in × 56 in) and is currently housed in the Galleria Nazionale di Parma, Italy.
The painting features the Virgin Mary at the center, holding the young Jesus who reaches out to St. Jerome, presented on the right side of the composition. St. Jerome, a Father of the Church best known for his translation of the Bible into Latin (the Vulgate), is accompanied by a lion, which according to legend became his faithful companion after he removed a thorn from its paw. On the left side of the painting stands St. Mary Magdalene, identifiable by her traditional attributes, the jar of ointment used to anoint Christ's feet.
Correggio's work is distinguished by its soft, diaphanous light and the gentle, almost imperceptible transitions between light and shadow, a technique known as sfumato that was also employed by Leonardo da Vinci. The figures are rendered with a sense of grace and naturalism, showcasing Correggio's skill in depicting human emotion and divine serenity. The composition's dynamic arrangement, with figures set at angles to each other, creates a sense of movement that is both harmonious and engaging.
"Madonna with St. Jerome" is a prime example of Correggio's mature style and his contribution to the development of the Parma school of painting. It exemplifies the High Renaissance's ideals of beauty and harmony, while also hinting at the emerging Mannerist style with its complex poses and elongated figures. The painting has been widely studied for its iconography, its innovative use of chiaroscuro, and its influence on later artists. As a significant work in the oeuvre of Correggio, "Madonna with St. Jerome" continues to be admired for its emotional depth and technical brilliance.
