Painting Description
"Infanta Maria Luisa de Borbón" is an eighteenth-century portrait painting by Anton Raphael Mengs, a notable of German Neoclassicism in the visual arts. Created in 1765 during Mengs's time in Spain, the oil on canvas artwork measures 112 by 86 cm. The painting features Maria Luisa de Borbón the Infanta of Spain and future Duchess of Lucca, elegantly depicted in royal apparel.
Born in 1745, Maria Luisa was the daughter of Spanish monarchs Charles III and Maria Amalia of Saxony. Mengs produced the painting when she was around 20 years old. The work beautifully captures the youthful and noble Spanish princess, adorned in fine silk gowns and sparkling jewelry, reflecting her stature and the opulence of the royal court.
The painting's style is characteristic of Mengs, who was known for his meticulous technical precision and thoughtfully balanced compositions. He masterfully marries the opulence and grandeur synonymous with royal portraiture to his personal Neoclassical style, combining the real and the ideal in a highly refined form of painting that helped define the aesthetics of his time.
The "Infanta Maria Luisa de Borbón" is now in the Prado Museum, Madrid, forming a crucial part of its collection of 18th-century Spanish art. It remains an outstanding example of Mengs's work. The painting not only conveys the refined elegance of the Spanish court in the 18th century but also attests to Mengs's mastery as a portraitist and significant contribution to the Neoclassical movement.
