Painting Description
Olivier de Clisson (1336-1407) was a prominent French nobleman and military leader during the late Middle Ages, known for his significant role in the Hundred Years' War. Born into the influential Clisson family in Brittany, Olivier's early life was marked by the turbulent political landscape of the region. His father, Olivier IV de Clisson, was executed in 1343 on charges of treason, an event that profoundly impacted young Olivier and shaped his future endeavors.
Olivier de Clisson's military career began in earnest during the Breton War of Succession, where he initially supported Charles de Blois. However, following the Treaty of Guérande in 1365, which ended the conflict, Clisson shifted his allegiance to the French crown. His prowess on the battlefield and strategic acumen earned him the favor of King Charles V of France, who appointed him as Constable of France in 1380, a position he held until 1392.
As Constable, Clisson played a crucial role in defending French territories against English incursions. He was instrumental in several key battles, including the Battle of Roosebeke in 1382, where his leadership helped secure a decisive victory for the French. Clisson's tenure as Constable was marked by his efforts to strengthen the French military and fortify the kingdom's defenses, particularly through the construction and reinforcement of castles and fortresses.
Despite his loyalty to the French crown, Clisson's career was not without controversy. His rivalry with John IV, Duke of Brittany, led to a series of conflicts that culminated in Clisson's temporary imprisonment and eventual release. In his later years, Clisson retired to his estates in Brittany, where he continued to wield considerable influence until his death in 1407.
Olivier de Clisson's legacy is remembered through various historical accounts and artistic depictions, including his portrayal in the "Portraits des grands hommes, femmes illustres, et sujets memorables de France," engraved by Ride and published between 1787 and 1792 by Antoine Louis François Sergent-Marceau. This work highlights Clisson's enduring significance in French history as a formidable military leader and a key figure in the complex political landscape of medieval France.
