Painting Description
Maurice, Count of Saxony (1696-1750), also known as Maurice de Saxe, was a prominent military leader and Marshal General of France. Born on October 28, 1696, in Goslar, Germany, he was the illegitimate son of Augustus II the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, and Maria Aurora von Königsmarck. Despite his illegitimacy, Maurice's noble lineage and his father's influence provided him with opportunities to pursue a distinguished military career.
Maurice de Saxe's military prowess became evident early in his life. He joined the army at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks due to his strategic acumen and leadership skills. His career was marked by numerous victories and significant contributions to French military successes during the War of the Austrian Succession and the War of Polish Succession. One of his most notable achievements was the victory at the Battle of Fontenoy in 1745, where his tactical genius played a crucial role in the French army's triumph over the British and their allies.
In addition to his battlefield accomplishments, Maurice de Saxe was also known for his writings on military theory. His work "Mes Rêveries" (My Reveries) is considered a significant contribution to military literature, offering insights into his strategic thinking and innovative approaches to warfare.
The engraving of Maurice de Saxe from "Portraits des grands hommes, femmes illustres, et sujets memorables de France," created by Ride and published between 1787 and 1792 by Antoine Louis François Sergent-Marceau, is a testament to his enduring legacy. This collection aimed to commemorate notable figures in French history, and Maurice de Saxe's inclusion underscores his importance and lasting impact on French military history.
Maurice de Saxe passed away on November 20, 1750, in Chambord, France. His legacy as a brilliant military commander and a key figure in 18th-century European warfare continues to be remembered and studied by historians and military enthusiasts alike.
