Born on January 29, 1584, in Delft, Frederick Henry was the youngest son of William the Silent, Prince of Orange, and Louise de Coligny. His early life was marked by the tumultuous period of the Eighty Years' War, during which the Dutch provinces sought independence from Spanish rule.
Frederick Henry's military career began in earnest following the assassination of his father in 1584. He quickly rose through the ranks, demonstrating exceptional strategic acumen and leadership skills. By 1625, he succeeded his half-brother, Maurice of Nassau, as the Prince of Orange and Stadtholder of the Dutch Republic. His tenure as Stadtholder was marked by significant military campaigns, including the successful sieges of 's-Hertogenbosch in 1629 and Maastricht in 1632, which were pivotal in weakening Spanish control in the region.
Beyond his military achievements, Frederick Henry was instrumental in the political and economic development of the Dutch Republic.
