Painting Description
"Self-Portrait" is an early 17th-century work by Italian Annibale Carracci (1560–1609), prominently recognized for his role in the development of the Baroque style in Italian art. Combining elements of late Renaissance painting with his own unique stylistic choices, Carracci produced a work here that is both richly introspective and technically proficient.
Created in approximately 1604, during what is chronologically classified as his late period, Carracci's self-portrait is housed in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia. It is rendered in oil on canvas, typical of the medium used by Italian Baroque painters, and measures 49 x 39 cm.
The portrait displays Carracci as somewhat solemn, possibly reflective of his health complications during this period. His expression radiates a touch of melancholy, possibly suggestive of his professional disappointments. Yet, the precision of the work – his meticulous rendering of the facial expressions and the quality of the attire – carries a quiet confidence of the artist’s proficiency.
In "Self-Portrait", Carracci not only presents a self-image, but also provides a tangible representation of the emotional state of an artist. The painting serves as a powerful testament to Carracci's artistic prowess and ability to express raw human emotions, thereby placing "Self-Portrait" among the great works of the Italian Baroque period.
