Painting Description
"Domine quo vadis?" is a renowned painting by the Italian Baroque artist Annibale Carracci, created around 1601-1602. This work is a significant example of Carracci's mastery in combining the classical idealization of the High Renaissance with the emotional intensity characteristic of the Baroque period. The painting depicts the apocryphal encounter between Saint Peter and Jesus Christ outside the walls of Rome, an event described in the "Acts of Peter" from the New Testament apocrypha.
According to the legend, Saint Peter, fleeing persecution in Rome, meets the risen Christ. When Peter asks "Domine, quo vadis?" (Latin for "Lord, where are you going?"), Christ responds that he is going to Rome to be crucified again. This encounter compels Peter to return to the city, where he ultimately meets his martyrdom. Carracci's interpretation of this poignant moment captures both the human and divine elements of the narrative, with a dramatic use of light and shadow that enhances the emotional impact of the scene.
The painting is executed in oil on canvas and measures approximately 77.4 cm by 56.3 cm. It is currently housed in the National Gallery in London. "Domine quo vadis?" is particularly noted for its dynamic composition and the psychological depth with which Carracci renders the figures of Peter and Christ. The work stands as a testament to Carracci's influential role in the development of Baroque painting, bridging the gap between the Renaissance emphasis on classical harmony and the Baroque's dramatic expressiveness.
